	Kimjongilia Directed by N.C. Heikin, 75 minutes, USA/France/South Korea, Lorber Films, 2009. The first film to fully expose the humanitarian crisis of North Korea, N.C. Heikin’s stylish, deeply moving documentary is centered around astonishing interviews with survivors of North Korea’s vast and largely hidden prison camps, and interspersed with archival footage of North Korean propaganda films and original performance. Along with the survivors’ stories — which illuminate the contours of daily life for a people whose every action is monitored, and whose every thought could bring retribution — Kimjongilia (named after a hybrid flower created for Kim Jong Il’s 46th’s birthday) examines the mass illusion possible under totalitarianism and the human rights abuses required to maintain that illusion. 	Green Zone Directed by Paul Greengrass, 115 minutes, France/USA/Spain/UK, Universal Pictures, 2010. With Igal Naor, Said Faraj, Matt Damon. United 93 director Paul Greengrass explores the aftermath of the Iraq invasion in this feature adaptation of author Rajiv Chandrasekaran's literary exposé of the same name. A one-time Baghdad bureau chief of the Washington Post, Chandrasekaran was present as American forces attempted to set up a provisional government on the grounds surrounding former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's opulent palace. In this fictional thriller set during the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad, director Greengrass and screenwriter Brian Helgeland use Chandrasekaran's novel as the foundation for the story of an officer who joins forces with a senior CIA officer to unearth evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. 	Evening Dress | La Robe du Soir Directed by Myriam Aziza, 96 minutes, France, 2009. With Alba Gaia Bellugi, Lio, Sophie Mounicot, Léo Legrand. Juliette lives with her two siblings and mother, and while a bit shy, seems to lead an average life. Then she develops a crush on her French teacher, Madame Solenska, who at first seems to appreciate her pupil’s admiration. Juliette becomes convinced that she’s as special to Madame Solenska as she feels the teacher is to her. But the crush veers off into obsession, as Juliette starts to follow Madame Solenska around town and even to her home. Myriam Aziza beautifully captures the stifling small-town atmosphere, as well as the complex, contradictory emotional life of this twelve-year-old: even if Juliette’s feelings are misguided or naïve, they are no less susceptible to being hurt. 	Everyday is a Holiday | Chaque Jour est une Fête Directed by Dima El-Horr, 87 minutes, France/Germany/Lebanon, 2009. With Hiam Abbass, Manal Khader, Raia Haïdar. A stunning first scene immediately establishes the highly charged atmosphere in Dima El-Horr’s carefully controlled first feature, filled with absurd moments and symbolic gestures. Three women with very different motives board a bus on the Lebanese Day of Liberation to visit their husbands in jail. When the bus is stopped short by a stray bullet, the women are left to find their own way in the hot sun through mountains full of mines, amid sounds of muffled explosions, throngs of refugees, and rumors of massacres. Their perilous journey becomes an internal one towards liberation, as individual life and collective memory blend, and the personal and political are blurred. 	The Father of My Children | Le Père de mes Enfants Directed by Mia Hansen-Løve, 110 minutes, France/Germany, IFC Films, 2009. With Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Chiara Caselli, Alice de Lencquesaing. Inspired by the life and death of the late, legendary French film producer Humbert Balsan, Mia Hansen-Løve’s film is a work of two halves. The first follows the business dealings of Grégoire, frantically shuttling between office and home, juggling the demands of artistic egos, lawyers, and bankers, and the needs of his beloved family—not to mention his surrogate family at work. Then the focus shifts dramatically to Grégoire’s wife Sylvia, who together with her three daughters, must cope with devastating loss and then struggle to keep Grégoire’s company afloat and preserve his legacy. If the first half of this moving yet never sentimental drama is among the most convincing depictions of life in the movie business ever filmed, the second is an incredibly tender look at picking up the pieces after heartbreaking bereavement. 	Women Without Men Directed by Shirin Neshat & Shoja Azari, 97 minutes, Germany/Austria/ France, Indiepix, 2009. With Navíd Akhavan, Mina Azarian, Bijan Daneshmand. Winner of the Silver Lion for best director at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, Shirin Neshat’s feature-film debut represents an assured shift from the gallery-based moving images for which she is known, to the grand screen of the cinema. Devotees of Neshat’s earlier work will recognize her signature visual virtuosity and narrative grace in the story of four women in early 1950s Iran. Then as now, the ambitions and actions of these women from across the spectrum of Iranian society inform and affect the course of events—public, private, and often political. With history as a backdrop, and imagination extending the limits of lives lived under oppressive conditions, Neshat offers an exquisitely framed window onto these women’s world. 	IFC Center presents  " LA CR ÈME DU CRIME " > > > through APRIL 4th A 12-film series of French crime classics, will be presented in IFC Center's ongoing Weekend Classics program from January 1st through April 4th. The program includes works from such Gallic masters as Godard, Malle, Truffaut, Clouzot, Melville, Bresson and Becker, as well as expatriate American Jules Dassin, whose tour-de-force RIFIFI set a new standard for heist movies. 	Persepolis Directed by Vincent Paronnaud & Marjane Satrapi, 96 minutes, France/USA, Sony Pictures Classics, 2007. With the voices Catherine Deneuve, Danielle Darrieux, Chiara Mastroianni. Based on the acclaimed graphic novels by Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis recounts the experiences of a girl growing up amidst the Iranian Revolution. Imaginatively and beautifully rendered in black and white animation, this is both an incisive evocation of a unique time and place as well as a buoyant coming-of-age tale. 	When the Sea Rises | Quand la Mer Monte Directed by Yolande Moreau & Gilles Porte, 90 minutes, Belgium/France, 2004. With Yolande Moreau, Wim Willaert, Olivier Gourmet, Jackie Berroyer. Irene is a quiet loner, comfortable only on stage. A parade float operator is a kindred spirit and becomes a lover, accompanying her on tour. But her husband and child waiting at home overshadow her newfound happiness. This film proves veteran actress Moreau to also be a gifted filmmaker.
